A pressure vessel is a container designed to hold gases or liquids at a pressure substantially different from the ambient pressure.
Pressure vessels are used in a variety of applications in industry. Examples of pressure vessels are distillation towers, pressure reactors, and many other vessels in mining operations, oil refineries and petrochemical plants, nuclear reactor vessels, pneumatic reservoirs, hydraulic reservoirs under pressure, storage vessels for liquified gases, LPG and many others.
The pressure differential is dangerous, and fatal accidents can occur during operation. Consequently, pressure vessel design, manufacture, and operation are regulated by engineering authorities backed by design codes and legislation such as the Pressure Equipment Directive of the EU (PED).
Pressure vessels are typically made of steel plates. Pressure vessel steel plates cover a range of steel grades that are suitable for use in pressure vessel manufacturing. The most common specifications for pressure vessel steels are the European EN10028 standards and the american ASME/ASTM standards. Carbon steel pressure vessel grades can cope with many applications where there is low corrosion and low heat. As heat and corrosion have more effect on the steel plates, chromium, molybdenum and nickel are added to provide additional resistance.
